The 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS earned the honor of pacing the Indianapolis 500 for the second time in three years, a remarkable achievement in the race's 50-year history. Engine choices started with a 300-horsepower 350-cubic-inch V8 and climbed through a 325-horsepower 396-cubic-inch option. For 1969, Chevrolet introduced a new hood with a Super Scoop intake that opened under acceleration, ramming cooler air into the engine for even more power. The SS rode on the widest tread of any sports car in its price class, with wide oval tires mounted on 14 x 7-inch wheels and a beefed-up suspension. The standard transmission was a special three-speed floor shift, with a four-speed equipped with a Hurst shifter available for those who wanted to row their own gears. Power disc brakes added serious stopping confidence.
The first-generation Camaro arrived in 1967 as Chevrolet's answer to the Ford Mustang, and by 1969 it had already established itself as a serious contender both on the street and at the track.
