The Ford Mustang debuted in 1964 at the New York World's Fair, and America fell in love instantly. Buyers flooded Ford showrooms, scrambling to be among the first to own one. Over 22,000 Mustangs were sold on the very first day, and sales reached 418,000 units in the first year. It was one of the most successful automotive launches in history.
The first Mustang, known as the 1964-1/2 model, was available as a coupe and a convertible. Both featured the now-iconic long hood and short rear deck, chrome wrap-around bumpers, a chrome grille with the signature running horse emblem, full wheel covers, and a sporty interior. The base car was affordable and accessible, but Ford's genius was the options list, which let buyers build everything from an economical commuter to a genuine performer.
Carroll Shelby entered the picture for 1965 with the GT350, a Mustang transformed into a Corvette competitor through serious performance modifications. The Shelby GT500 followed in 1967, powered by a 428 V8 engine and loaded with both luxury and performance features. It remained in production through 1970. The 1967 Mustang itself received simulated air scoops, a larger grille, and added length that gave it a more aggressive presence. By 1969, the Mustang had grown bigger and heavier still, stretching nearly four inches longer.
The 1969 and 1970 model years introduced a wave of new performance variants: the Grande, the Mach 1, the Boss 302, and the legendary Boss 429. The Boss 351 arrived for 1971.
