The Chevrolet Monte Carlo debuted for the 1970 model year as an American-made two-door personal luxury coupe, and it would endure across six generations through 2007. Marketed as a personal luxury car through most of its life, the Monte Carlo outlasted competitors that were either discontinued years earlier or transformed into something entirely different.
The first four generations (1970 to 1972, 1973 to 1977, 1978 to 1980, and 1981 to 1988) were rear-wheel-drive, V8-powered coupes using traditional body-on-frame construction. A V6 option became available starting in 1978. These later rear-drive generations bucked the industry trend toward unitized construction and smaller engines that took hold in the early 1980s, as automakers downsized their lineups to meet fuel-economy regulations in the wake of the 1973 and 1979 energy crises. Despite those market pressures, the Monte Carlo remained a popular seller and even brought back the SS designation from mid-1983 through 1988, equipped with a high-performance 305-cubic-inch V8. The original SS had been offered for the 1970 and 1971 model years with a 454-cubic-inch V8.
Following a several-year hiatus after the rear-drive model's 1988 discontinuation, the Monte Carlo nameplate was revived for 1995 on a front-drive, V6-powered coupe platform shared with the Chevrolet Lumina sedan. The sixth and final generation arrived in 2000, built alongside the Chevrolet Impala. The Monte Carlo SS returned from 2000 through 2007, initially powered by a 3.8-liter V6 that gained a supercharger for 2004 and 2005 before being replaced by a 5.3-liter V8.
