International Scout II

International Scout Radiators

The International Harvester Scout was one of the first American civilian off-road sport utility vehicles ever produced. Created as a direct competitor to the Jeep, early models even featured fold-down windshields, just like their military-inspired rival. The Scout and its successor, the Scout II, were produced as two-door vehicles with options including a half-cab pickup truck configuration or a removable full hardtop or soft top. Manufacturing took place in Fort Wayne, Indiana from 1961 through 1980.

The original Scout 80 was built between 1960 and 1965, featuring removable sliding side windows in the earliest models, a 152-cubic-inch four-cylinder engine, a fold-down windshield, and vacuum-powered wipers mounted at the top of the windshield. The Scout 800 replaced it in late 1965, bringing improvements in comfort and design including bucket seats, better instrumentation and heating systems, optional rear seats, and a range of engine choices: the 196-cubic-inch four-cylinder, 232-cubic-inch six-cylinder, or 266-cubic-inch V8. A turbocharged version of the 152 four-cylinder was offered from 1965 through 1967.

The 800A arrived in 1969 with additional comfort options, a revised front end, drivetrain upgrades including a heavier rear axle and the quieter Dana 20 transfer case, and a 304-cubic-inch V8 option. The Scout II followed in 1971 on a 100-inch wheelbase, and the lineup eventually expanded to include the Terra light pickup and Traveler wagon, both on a longer 118-inch wheelbase. The Soft-top Safari II, produced from 1977 through 1979, featured removable fabric doors, a roll bar, and a soft top. Originally tagged "SSII" by IH marketing, buyers eventually adopted the name "Super Scout."

The original Scout 80 even served as the inspiration for Ford's first Bronco. These rugged vehicles have earned a devoted following among off-road enthusiasts and collectors. Griffin Thermal Products builds exact-fit aluminum radiators for International Scouts, delivering the cooling performance these pioneering SUVs deserve.
